In a recent poll that TxSP posted on our LinkedIn social media, we asked which recently passed bill was causing the biggest challenge, and SB 12 was the overwhelming choice. Many districts proactively created their own parental notifications and permission forms in order to comply with the September 1st implementation date prior to receiving clarification from TEA on August 28th.
TxSP has updated the forms listed on the graphic after researching information provided by TASB, TEA’s FAQs, the preliminary draft presented for the upcoming Texas Administrative Code (TAC) on SB 12, and the letter sent to the Commissioner, Mike Morath, by the co-authors of SB 12.
Many districts have already sent out the TEA Parental Rights and Options Information. If your district has not, here is the link to that form and other recent information provided by TEA.
Based on the most recent information, TxSP has revised the protocol and documents for counseling services and health-related services. TxSP strongly encourages you to review these links for clarification on opt-in and opt-out requirements for certain services.
One of our districts asked if we could develop a form for athletic trainers and other personnel to provide health-related care and services. The law does not require this, but if you want to check it out, click on this link.
If your district is still unsure about mental health services and you have not checked TxSP’s protocols and documents out, please click the red button below. The permission form is unnecessary until a student is referred for mental health services.
If your district has still not sent out permission forms for students to participate in after-school activities, please click the black button below for the form. While you are in that filing cabinet, you might want to view the requirements and guidelines for school sponsors so that they have information to run their organization in compliance with the law and best practices.
